Within the framework of the missions and humanitarian efforts of the Coast Guard units of the Naval Forces Command, aiming to save lives at sea, the National Maritime Search and Rescue Operations Centre received a distress call on Friday, 21st November 2025, at 7:10 a.m. from a sailor aboard a sailboat named "SY-FRILEUSE," flying the French flag, located 57 nautical miles north of Ain Benian/Algiers, coming from Sardinia on the way to the Strait of Gibraltar. The sailor is named Nicolas CHARPY, a 60-year-old French national, who had fallen ill.
Immediately, and in coordination with the Regional Maritime Search and Rescue Operations Centre in Algiers/1st Military Region, the National Maritime Search and Rescue Operations Centre launched a search and rescue operation at sea, deploying the AS-12 search and rescue helicopter under the 560th Search and Rescue Helicopter Squadron. The French sailor was urgently evacuated to the hospital of Zéralda to receive the necessary treatment.
His condition is currently stable. This operation comes within the framework of the humanitarian missions of the Coast Guard units under the Naval Forces Command, reflecting their efforts and unwavering commitment to intervening to save lives at sea, regardless of the circumstances.
