In 1963, the formation of the first cavalry nucleus at the Horse Breeding Centre in Sidi Mabrouk in Constantine. Its elements were moved to the barracks of El Eulma with a number of horsemen not exceeding 23 elements, to be transferred in the same year to the barracks of the Lido where the formation of the cavalry unit was started. In the same context, 70 young people from countrysides and villages wishing to join the cavalry were recruited and received military training followed by specialization in equestrianism. The unit was called the "National Equestrian Establishment".

     In 1964, its first participation in the horse riding festival in Oued Himimine in Constantine. In 1965, the first participation of a military rider (cadet) in a show jumping competition in Italy. In 1966, with the participation of the Algerian Equestrian Federation, a training session was organized for military and civilian riders under the supervision of foreign trainers. In the period between 1967 and 1968, training courses were given to Algerian trainers in the field of horseback riding with the help of foreign experts and while acquiring horses of a German race. In 1970, four riders from the Gendarmerie Grouping of the Ministerial Reserve participated with the national team in the international competition in Rabat (Morocco). Following the creation of the Republican Guard in 1972, cavalry formations were reinforced with elements of special troops from the city of Skikda. From that date, the Cavalry Formations have participated in all cultural and sporting fields other than its main missions which consist in presenting honours on horseback or on foot.
