The units and their different specialties:

     Between 1969 and 1972, the creation of guard units from three (03) intervention companies of the National Gendarmerie and the creation of escort and parade formations and a presentation company with weapon, these formations are considered as the core of the Gendarmerie Grouping of the Ministerial Reserve.
      The Republican Guard was created on 20 July 1972, replacing the Gendarmerie Grouping of the Ministerial Reserve, with the task of guarding the headquarters of the Presidency of the Republic, its annexes and the residences under the Presidency.
      In 1973, the Republican Guard completed the restructuring, creating units and connecting others.

     On 16 March 1976, the creation of the 3^rd Intervention Battalion. On 11 September 1979, the attachment of the 47^th Battalion stationed in Dar El-Beida, currently located in Baba Ali (Algiers). During the same date, saw the reunification of the 56^th Battalion located in Zeralda. On July 04, 1979, the Republican Guard was attached to the Command of the National Gendarmerie with missions:

• Guard of the headquarters of the Presidency of the Republic and its residences;
• Escort and parade in honour of His Excellency the President of the Republic;
• Participation in the official ceremonies attended by the President of the Republic.

     In the same year, the second guard battalion was created. It is based in EL-Mouradia, and is in charge of guarding the headquarters of the Presidency of the Republic and its annexes.
     As part of the restructuring and appointment of National People's Army units, these units are now called "Guard and Intervention Battalions".
     The Republican Guard has undergone a new phase of development and organization, where it was promoted in 2006 to the rank of Command (Command of the Republican Guard) to be in tune with the modernization and development that the National People's Army and its various forces and structures are undergoing.

     Since then, the Republican Guard units, with all their different specialties, became regiments at the beginning of 2008, in accordance with the missions assigned to them and creating new structures, namely:

1. Specialized Units:
• The 1^st Parade Regiment;
• The 11^th Cavalry and Escort Regiment.

 

2. The Guard and Protection Units:
• The 2^nd Regiment of Guard and Protection;
• The 5^th Regiment of Guard and Protection;
• The 56^th Regiment of Guard and Protection.

   

3. The Motorized Intervention Units:
• The 3^rd Motorized Intervention Regiment;
• The 4^th Motorized Intervention Regiment;
• The 47^th Motorized Intervention Regiment;
• The Special Intervention Regiment.

4. The Support Units:
• The Headquarters Grouping;
• The central support facility;
• The horse breeding centre in Laghouat.

5. Training Establishments:
Since 2006, the Republican Guard Command has set up training bodies, namely:
• The Republican Guard Non-Commissioned Officers School in Laghouat;
• The School of Music at Lido Bordj El-kifan Algiers;
• The Republican Guard Training Centre in Laghouat;
• The Horse-riding Training Centre in Laghouat.

6. Sports and Cultural Infrastructures:
• The Republican Guard sports complex in Lido Algiers;
• The sports grouping centre in Eucalyptus Algiers since 2009.

     The development outlook is being carried out in accordance with the vision and expected objectives of the High Command of the National People's Army.
